Designed like the Chinese porcelain of the
seventeenth century, Delft is named for the city in southern Holland of
the same name. Delftware is typically decorated with metal oxides and a
white glaze is applied. Typical Delft pieces include plates, tiles and
other ornamental objects. The pieces were able to mimic the Chinese
porcelain so well because of the type of glazing that was done, wherein
the artist coated the entire surface, rather than just the painted
part, with a tin glaze. A clear glaze would follow, which is what gives
the piece its characteristic appearance.
